You have an Odoo backup. But who will restore it, and how will they confirm that the business can work again? This guide covers preparation for recovery or a hosting move. It does not describe a particular client incident.

Agree how quickly the business must resume work

With process owners, define acceptable downtime and potential data loss. List everything needed for recovery: the database, the attachment storage known as the filestore, custom modules, access credentials, integrations and scheduled tasks. A database backup alone may not be enough to restore the whole Odoo system.

Rehearse recovery in isolation

Restore the database and its matching filestore in a separate environment. Check Odoo and module versions. Disable outgoing email, payment-gateway notifications and scheduled integrations during the rehearsal so the test does not affect real operations. Check permissions and selected records.

Prepare the switch and a way back

Define who approves the change, when writes stop and how the final backup is taken. Check domain routing, certificates and integration endpoints. Agree in advance when to return to the previous setup. Prevent two production instances from accepting writes at the same time.

Confirm readiness with users

Before restoring access, verify key workflows with their owners. Monitor errors, scheduled tasks and pending data transfers between systems. Update the recovery procedure with what the rehearsal reveals. Only practice establishes achievable recovery times in your environment; this guide promises neither a fixed time nor zero data loss.
